Nationalist politician Li Hsiao-liang, a potential candidate for a seat in Taipei City's Wanhua District, has been embroiled in controversy. Despite facing party disciplinary action over a recent speech that sparked debate, Li has now been accused of having dual citizenship and not having served in the military. The Taipei City Military Bureau said on Wednesday that Li is still within the age range for military service and is being temporarily deferred due to old law. However, the conditions for temporary deferment have not been lifted. Li's residency period has indeed exceeded one year. The military bureau refused to disclose the name under which Li applied for temporary deferment, saying that he should clarify and respond himself. The bureau also stated that it will not issue a military draft notice to Li as long as the reason for his deferment is still in effect.
